Chapter Twenty

Jason

“Are ya sure ya don’t want me to come in with you? You know that I don’t mind,” Mikey says, following me down the hallway of the ACE headquarters.

Christian called me last night, asked me to come in so we could ‘talk’. I didn’t tell Evelyn about it, knowing that it’s likely to make her worry. Hell, I don’t want to admit it but I’m worried. I haven’t been in a fight in a little over a month, just got cleared, but I’m rusty. What if over that time, Christian realized that I’m not worth all of the trouble?

What if my clean up act is happening just a little too late?

I stop outside of Christian’s door, turning to look at Mikey. I asked him to come with me because I didn’t want to face this alone. If I’m going to be unemployed, so is he.

“Nah.” I shake my head. “I can handle it.”

I don’t need someone to hold my hand while I do this.

Mikey looks at me carefully, raising an eyebrow before shrugging his shoulder. “Whatever ya say. I’ll be out here waiting.” With that, he takes a seat in one of the chairs in the hallway, pulling his phone out of his jeans.

I take a breath, preparing myself for whatever comes next. Raising my fist, I knock at Christian’s office door.

“Come in, Jason,” comes Christian’s reply from the other side of the door.

I swallow and try to put on as much confidence as possible, before opening Christian’s door and stepping inside. I close it behind me, not glancing at Christian until I walk over and take a seat in the chair across from his desk.

“Good to see you up and moving. You look good,” he says.

I nod. “It’s good to be up and going again.”

“I’ve heard that our doctors have cleared you to return, right? You passed all of our concussion protocols?”

I nod again. “With flying colors. First time in my life.” I’ve never been nervous around Christian. I’ve never felt intimidated by him before. It’s different now. Back then, I thought that Christian would lose it all if he lost me. Now I know that I’m the one with everything to lose.

I don’t want to let Evie down.

“Good to hear,” he says. “Jason, I’m going to be honest with you.”

That’s never a good sign.

Christian continues, “I was expecting to have a PR nightmare on my hands with you being out of commission. Hell, with you in commission it’s usually a PR nightmare. At least you work off some of that energy you have during a fight though. Without it, I was prepared to have to keep cleaning up messes. But...it’s been the opposite. I haven’t heard anything about you getting mixed up in any trouble.”

I can’t remember the last time I’ve been to a nightclub. I can’t remember the last time I’ve gotten in a fight. I guess I have been cleaning up my act.

I shrug. “Guess I’ve been on my best behavior, huh?”

Christian chuckles. “It looks like you have, Jason.
